Key Person Appoach

The Key Person Approach is a method of providing each child with a dedicated staff member in the nursery who builds a close, supportive relationship with the child and their family. This approach ensures that every child feels safe, valued, and understood, creating a secure foundation for learning and development.

What Is Key Person Approach?

In the Key Person Approach, each child is assigned a specific staff member – called the Key Person who takes a special interest in their well-being, learning, and development. The Key Person gets to know the child’s likes, dislikes, interests, and needs, providing continuity and emotional support. This trusted relationship helps children feel confident and secure, making it easier for them to explore, learn, and thrive in the nursery environment.

How We Implement the Key Person Approach at Sherwood Green

At our nurseries, we implement the Key Person Approach by:

Assigning a Key Person

Upon joining the nursery, each child is assigned a Key Person who will be responsible for observing, planning, and supporting the child’s development. This person also becomes the primary contact for the child’s parents or carers. During settling-in sessions, we’ll learn all about your child’s preferences and unique needs. Whether they have a favourite story, activity, or comforter, we incorporate these elements into their nursery experience to ensure they feel at home.

Building Trusting Relationship

The Key Person spends one-on-one time with the child to build trust and comfort. Through daily interactions, the Key Person learns about the child’s interests, personality, and individual needs, creating a safe and secure environment for them.

Supporting Development and Well-being

The Key Person monitors the child’s progress, identifies areas for growth, and plans activities that cater to the child’s individual learning style and interests. They also provide emotional support, helping the child manage any challenges and encouraging positive behaviour

Communicating with Families

The Key Person keeps parents and carers updated on the child’s development and shares observations, milestones, and any areas where additional support may be needed. Regular communication ensures parents feel involved and informed, fostering a strong partnership in supporting the child.

Consistency and Continuity

We prioritise consistency by having the same Key Person work with the child whenever possible. This continuity of care helps the child feel more secure and eases transitions, such as moving to a new room or group.

Benefits of the Key Person Approach

By implementing the Key Person Approach, we create a nurturing environment where each child feels understood and supported. This method encourages emotional resilience, independence, and confidence, allowing children to form positive relationships with both adults and peers.
